    Expanding worlds: place and collaboration in (and after) the ‘text-as-spatial-event’

    This short position paper seeks to explore the collaborative role of place in the unfolding of the ‘text-as-spatial-event’ (Hones 2008) via the expansion of the extra-textual. The work presented here forms part of an ongoing interdisciplinary collaboration initiated by our meeting at the ‘Literary Geographies of Collaboration’ roundtable, held at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, in August 2018. While each of us has worked with literary texts in previous analyses of place and performativity within our ‘home’ disciplines, cultural geography (Thurgill 2018) and tourism studies (Lovell and Bull 2017; Lovell 2019), this collaboration has allowed us to reconsider the parameters of influence involved in the reading of literary texts, and moreover, to think about the ways in which the extra-textual might be used to show an expansion or development of reading(s) and of space(s) that continues far beyond the text itself. In what follows, we set out place’s collaborative role in (and after) the ‘text-as-spatial- event’ and outline the conditions for the oscillation of affect at work in the re-imagining of extra-literary environments. This ‘oscillation of affect’ sees the sights, sounds, smells and feel of places that readers experience prior to engaging with literary texts, and which work to inform their understanding of the text’s geography, undergo a transformative process through the ‘text-as-spatial-event’ so that places can come to be seen as displaying the affective properties of the text itself. We suggest that this shifting of affect from shaping literary to actual-world experiences may even prompt some readers to locate extra-literary experiences in actual-world places not associated with the novel but which feel like they share the same affective environment

The limited data currently available on the environmental conditions are used to generate the provisional specification given in this report

    Face and Object Recognition and Detection Using Colour Vector Quantisation

    In this paper we present an approach to face and object detection and recognition based on an extension of the contentbased image retrieval method of Lu and Teng (1999). The method applies vector quantisation (VQ) compression to the image stream and uses Mahalonobis weighted Euclidean distance between VQ histograms as the measure of image similarity. This distance measure retains both colour and spatial feature information but has the useful property of being relatively insensitive to changes in scale and rotation. The method is applied to real images for face recognition and face detection applications. Tracking and object detection can be coded relatively efficiently due to the data reduction afforded by VQ compression of the data stream. Additional computational efficiency is obtained through a variation of the tree structured fast VQ algorithm also presented here

    Homogenised Virtual Support Vector Machines

    In many domains, reliable a priori knowledge exists that may be used to improve classifier performance. For example in handwritten digit recognition, such a priori knowledge may include classification invariance with respect to image translations and rotations. In this paper, we present a new generalisation of the Support Vector Machine (SVM) that aims to better incorporate this knowledge. The method is an extension of the Virtual SVM, and penalises an approximation of the variance of the decision function across each grouped set of "virtual examples", thus utilising the fact that these groups should ideally be assigned similar class membership probabilities. The method is shown to be an efficient approximation of the invariant SVM of Chapelle and Scholkopf, with the advantage that it can be solved by trivial modification to standard SVM optimization packages and negligible increase in computational complexity when compared with the Virtual SVM. The efficacy of the method is demonstrated on a simple problem

    This chapter discusses the usage of Support Vector Machines (SVM) for business applications. It provides a brief historical background on inductive learning and pattern recognition, and then an intuitive motivation for SVM methods. The method is compared to other approaches, and the tools and background theory required to successfully apply SVMs to business applications are introduced. The authors hope that the chapter will help practitioners to understand when the SVM should be the method of choice, as well as how to achieve good results in minimal time

    Grayscale optical-flow methods have long been the focus of methods for recovering optical flow. Optical flow recovery from color-images can be implemented using direct methods, i.e. without using computationally costly iterations or search strategies. The quality of recovered optical flow can be assessed and tailored after processing, providing an effective, efficient tool for motion estimation. In this paper, a brief introduction to optical flow is presented, the optical flow constraint equation and its extension to color images is presented. New methods for solving this extended equation are given. Results of applying these methods to two synthetic image sequences are presented

    Individualisation of time-motion analysis : a method comparison and case report series

This study compared the intensity distribution of time-motion analysis data, when speed zones were categorized by different methods. 12 U18 players undertook a routine battery of laboratory- and field-based assessments to determine their running speed corresponding to the respiratory compensation threshold (RCT), maximal aerobic speed (MAS), maximal oxygen consumption (vVO 2max ) and maximal sprint speed (MSS). Players match-demands were tracked using 5 Hz GPS units in 22 fixtures (50 eligible match observations). The percentage of total distance covered running at high-speed (%HSR), very-high speed (%VHSR) and sprinting were determined using the following speed thresholds: 1) arbitrary; 2) individualised (IND) using RCT, vVO 2max and MSS; 3) individualised via MAS per se; 4) individualised via MSS per se; and 5) individualised using MAS and MSS as measures of locomotor capacities (LOCO). Using MSS in isolation resulted in 61 % and 39 % of player's % HSR and % VHSR, respectively, being incorrectly interpreted, when compared to the IND technique. Estimating the RCT from fractional values of MAS resulted in erroneous interpretations of % HSR in 50 % of cases. The present results suggest that practitioners and researchers should avoid using singular fitness characteristics to individualise the intensity distribution of time-motion analysis data. A combination of players' anaerobic threshold, MAS, and MSS characteristics are recommended to individualise player-tracking data
